Das ist so gut, daß kann man nicht im kleinen Kreis lassen.

Auf tex-implementors und in anderen Gruppen wird seit einiger Zeit
über die Y2K-Compliance von TeX diskutiert. Es gibt eine Stelle, an
der TeX die Jahreszahl nur zweistellig ausgibt: In der Log-Datei, in
der die Format-Datei mitprotokolliert wird.

DEK wurde gefragt, ob man das Datum da vierstellig ausgeben darf. (Man
darf.)

    I agree that it would now be best to remove the "mod 100" from TeX
    module 1328 and from MF module 1200 (and from METAPOST in the
    corresponding place). I hereby give permission to implementors to
    make such changes in their change files. No change to the version
    numbers are needed.

Eigentlich interessant ist aber der Hinweis, warum die Jahreszahl
zweistellig ist:

    I'm not changing page 23 of The TeXbook --- where the example was
    probably my original motivation for cutting to two digits, since
    the example wouldn't fit on a single line otherwise --- [...]

Weil das Beispiel nicht auf eine Zeile passte, änderte er lieber das
Programm... DEK live. ``What do you do against underfull hboxes? --
Answer for normal people: Rewrite your text. Answer for DEK: Change
your typesetter.'' ;-)
