Also ich muß mal dazusagen (korrigiert mich, wenn das redundant
ist), ich habe bei mir bisher immer die Adresse des PtP-Partners in
route.conf eingetragen.

192.168.3.0     0.0.0.0     255.255.255.0   eth0
192.109.42.4    0.0.0.0     255.255.255.255 ippp0
default 192.109.42.4

Das funktioniert (Kernel 2.2.12). Allerdings wissen die Clients
auch, daß 192.109.42.4 der DNS ist.
