Probier mal 'ssh -t maddin at 192.168.1.2 mutt', dann sollte es gehen.
Aus der Man-Page für ssh:
-t Force pseudo-tty allocation. This can be used to execute arbi
trary screen-based programs on a remote machine, which can be
very useful, e.g., when implementing menu services. Multiple -t
options force tty allocation, even if ssh has no local tty.
Der Grund ist date schreibt auf die Standardausgabe und das kann die ssh
ohne Probleme aber für Programme wie brauch es etwas mehr...
