Bei mir mit Debian habe ich folgende Pakete installiert:

    i   klogd                           - Kernel Logging Daemon                     
    i   login                           - system login tools                        
    i   logrotate                       - Log rotation utility                      
    i   sysklogd                        - System Logging Daemon                     

Versuch mal bei Dir mit:
    aptitude search log | grep "^i"
um zu sehen, was bei Dir installiert ist.
