wo bekommst du es nicht zum laufen? Unter X? in der Console? 
Hast du alsa installiert? 
ist das Kernelmodul sound_core geladen? 
Welche Distro?
Welcher Kernel?

PS.: wenn du alsa installiert hast, ruf mal als root alsactl -i auf
und schau mal was dann passiert / wie ist die Ausgabe?
