I have seen it running at a friends machine and it seemed to be perfekt, but on my machine big problems appeared. My machine is a Pentium I/75MHz. Unfortunally it's BIOS is so old, that it supports 8,6GB Harddrives only. I own a 13,6GB Harddrive, so I downloaded an "ontrack disc manager" from the harddiscmanufacturer (maxtor), wich I flashwrote into the harddisk's BIOS. Well it works, but slowes down my whole system. I guess my problems (wich I will discribe later) are effected by this circumstance. My problems: My Jazz-16 Soundbord works fine with .wav, .mp3, .avi... samples, audio-CD as well, but there is no MIDI-voice at all. The only MIDI-sound I ever heared was the test-MIDI from "sndconfig". That was played perfectly clear, so obviously MIDI is working in generally. The softwaremodules (midiinstruments, midiplay...) are installed and they are booting fine ([OK]-message). No Printer is working! And again prntool's testpage was printed perfectly (I tryed with three different printers (Epson 9-pin, Epson 24-pin, Canon Bubblejet 500c) wich all have been in the drivers list) but out from KDE, Maxwell, or Netscape-Navigator, or what ever, no printing is possible. There are much more minor software problems wich appear, spread all over the system. For instance, system hangs up, when navigator is open and an e-mail is comming in over k-biff (sometimes it does, sometimes not), or system hangup while trying to outlock from an KDE-session, and so on, and so on... those software problems seem not to be speciffically connected with special programs, or hardware parts. The rule seems, the more multitasking, the shurer it hangs up I installed the whole OS over and over again, I tryed different partitions, full installs, spare installs, smart installs (what socalled experts told me to be smart at least..:-)) Well I know, that those problems seem to be completely confusing and unlogical. I'm very shure that all setups are correct, I've been thrue all the docs, FAQ's, the newbies-mailing list, your telephone hotline and all my friends wich work with Linux (and some of them get payed for being computer experts). No one could help my. Is it possible, that the ondisctrackmanager I use, to convert my big harddrive to my old BIOS, is the root of the problem? Have you got any other hints, or idears? Do you need, further information to help me? Please send me a mail. Thanks in advance, Joerg Reinhardt P.S. sorry das ich auf englisch schreibe, die mail war eigentlich für Mandrake, die antworten aber leider nicht. ]
