This trash seems to be the problem :

  LDOPTX=-L/usr/local/lib -Wl,-R/usr/local/lib -liconv
  LIBS=-liconv


Once I remove those from existence I can compile smake. However I
suspect that all of the smake build will look fine and then there will
be an unresolved NEED for libiconv in the final output elf objects.

We shall see.... it takes time on this old Sun Netra.
