As an experiment, I have simply used "find -delete" on the source to
remove each and every occurrence of the word "register" from it.

Yes, I agree, that is *not* a way of doing things, and I may well have
"renamed some variables" and "mangled some license texts" that way, but
it *did* build OK with cowbuilder/pbuilder on Devuan Linux for amd64,
i686, arm64, armhf, armel, ppc64el and riscv64.

Can not test it on all of these, but seemed to work OK on amd64, i686 and
armhf.
