I built 3c05f95d (before the patch) and 12758941 (after the patch) on
Debian unstable x86_64, which uses gcc-13.2.0 and GNU make 4.3.

The only difference in both build trees besides the patched .cc files
are 2 config.log files mentioning different random names for the
compiler output in /tmp.

So the keyword register already got ignored hard by gcc, its removel did
not change any binary.

I see no reason this should not be merged.
