Was ist devfs, wozu ist es gut ?

bei mir finde ich in linux/.config :
# CONFIG_DEVFS_FS is not set

ist klar, da ich mit folgendem nichts anzufangen weiß

/dev file system support (EXPERIMENTAL)
CONFIG_DEVFS_FS
  This is another virtual file system (like /proc) which provides the
  file system interface to device drivers, normally found in /dev.
  Devfs does not depend on major and minor number allocations. Device
  drivers register entries in /dev which appear automagically. Without
  devfs you need to populate /dev with hundreds, even thousands of
  inodes.
  This is work in progress. If you want to use this you *must* read
  Documentation/filesystems/devfs/README
  In particular, make sure you install devfsd. If you don't, expect to
  spend time patching broken code and updating configuration files.

das Documentation/filesystems/devfs/README
ist eine sehr lange Datei (41 kB) mit der meine Englischkenntnisse
mal wieder total überfordert sind, da die Materie mir nicht vertraut
ist.

Gibts eine kurze deutsche Erlärung ?

devpts war ja Anfang 1999 auch noch neu und jetzt ist es
sebstverständlich. Ist es was entfernt ähnliches ?
