Du nutz eine RPM-basierte Distribution?
Was gibt denn `rpm -qi $PACKAGE` aus?

Aus rpm(8):
SYNOPSIS
   QUERYING AND VERIFYING PACKAGES:
       rpm {-q|--query} [select-options] [query-options]
             ^
[...]
   PACKAGE QUERY OPTIONS:
[...]
       -i, --info
        ^     Display package information, including name, version, and
              description.  This uses the --queryformat if one was specified.

Ich ging davon aus, dass bei FC 5 (nutzt Du doch?) manpages dabei sind.
„batteries included“ bringt in diesem Fall wenig.
