linux-l: Probleme mit ATi XPert 2000 und XFree 4.0

Nach wie vor scheitere ich daran, auf dem Rechner eines Freundes Debian
potato zufriedenstellend zu konfigurieren, langsam wird es peinlich.

Der Rechner ist relativ neu und deshalb ein unangenehmes Biest
(USB-Hardware...). Probleme bereitet vor allem die Installation von X11 in
Zusammenarbeit mit der ATi XPert 2000-Karte. Wie mir andernorts gesagt
wurde, gibt es von dieser Karte eine zweite Version, für die man XFree 4.0
braucht. Also habe ich den potato-Backport von XFree 4.0 installiert. Ruft
man xf86config auf, wird zwar eine Datei "XFree86Config.new" nach /root
geschrieben, doch quittiert das Programm mit folgender Fehlermeldung den
Dienst:

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Dasselbe passiert, wenn man anschließend startx aufruft. 
Ich füge sämtliche Ausgaben von xf86config anbei. Kann sich jemand einen
Reim darauf machen? Da mir XFree 4.0 fremd ist und ich weder in den
manpages, noch in den FAQ Antwort finden konnte, hoffe ich auf Eure Hilfe.
